I am the owner of Brass Ring Training. Since I am currently working on my dissertation in adult learning ("The impact of formal training on informal learning networks in the organization"), I am taking some time off from his work at BRT. I am using the website for the business to capture thoughts on my areas of interest and work: games and learning design, experiential learning, informal learning, education design, social network analysis, and technology in education.
I have been working in trianing and development and executive education since 1996, starting off as a team building facilitator and working into complex, computer based business simulations before being hired by Duke Corporate Education in 2000. I have worked with Duke CE either full-time or as a contractor since then. In that time, I became involved in designing Duke CE's Metaphoric Experiences TM. Among others, I lead the design on the Basketball Experience highlighted in this Business Week article.
In 2006, I earned a Masters of Education in Training and Development from North Carolina State University. My master's thesis topic was how learning from analogically situated contexts. It was published in the Academy of Management Learning in the special issue on Executive Education in 2007. Since then I have been working on a Doctorate of Education and I am currently writing my dissertation.
In 2009 I co-designed a course with Brad Mehlenbacher, my dissertation advisor, on Games and Learning Design. We are planning on teaching it again and hope to integrate it into the NCSU curriculum on game design.
